WHAT IS DOOR ACCESS CONTROL?

Move Beyond Physical Keys

A door access control system replaces or supplements traditional keys with electronic verification. A user presents a card, fingerprint, face, QR code or PIN. The system checks the user’s permission and unlocks the door only when access is authorised.

This gives businesses more control over restricted areas and creates a digital record of access events. If your main requirement is employee clocking rather than entry security, explore our Time Attendance System.

Typical Uses

• Main office entrance
• Server or IT room
• Management office
• Warehouse or stock room
• Factory restricted zone
• Staff-only area
• Multi-door and multi-branch access

WHY ACCESS CONTROL

Security with Better Accountability

Prevent Unauthorised Entry

Only authorised users can access controlled doors or areas.

Access Audit Trail

Record who accessed a door and when, depending on the selected system.

Time-Based Access

Grant or restrict access according to schedules, shifts or selected time periods.

Easy Permission Changes

Revoke or update user permissions without changing physical locks or issuing new keys.

VERIFICATION METHODS

Choose the Right Way to Identify Users

RFID / Card

Simple and fast. Suitable for many workplaces, but cards can be shared or misplaced.

Fingerprint

Stronger identity verification because the enrolled user must present their biometric.

Face Recognition

Contactless verification and suitable for faster user flow.

QR Code

Useful for selected user, visitor or temporary access workflows depending on the system.

PIN / Password

Simple credential option, often used as primary or backup verification.

SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE

Standalone vs Controller-Based Access Control

STANDALONE

Reader / Terminal Controls the Door

Best for: simple or smaller deployments.

✓ Easier architecture
✓ Lower system complexity
✓ Suitable for selected single-door applications
✓ Biometric or card terminal can manage local users and access

Consideration: less flexible than controller-based systems for large multi-door deployments.

CONTROLLER-BASED

Readers Connect to a Central Access Controller

Best for: multi-door, central management and higher-security projects.

✓ Centralised control
✓ Better scalability
✓ Suitable for multiple readers and doors
✓ Easier expansion to advanced access logic
✓ Reader can be separated from the control hardware

COMPLETE DOOR SYSTEM

Door Access Is More Than Just the Reader

A complete system may include the credential reader or biometric terminal, access controller, electric lock, exit button, door sensor, power supply and management software. The exact design depends on the door and security requirement.

1. Reader

Face, fingerprint, card, QR or PIN.

2. Controller

Checks access rules and controls the door.

3. Door Lock

Maglock, drop bolt or suitable locking hardware.

4. Exit & Sensor

Exit button, door sensor and related accessories.

5. Software

User management, logs and system control where supported.

TIMETERA ACCESS OPTIONS

Access Devices for Different Security Requirements

Timetera TT-EP1 Pro

Entry-level access terminal for face, card and password workflows, with optional palm support depending on project configuration.

Timetera TT-P2 AI Pro

Higher-tier multi-mode access terminal supporting face, fingerprint, card, password, palm and QR, with built-in intercom capability.

Timetera D250

A practical fingerprint attendance + door access option for simpler deployments.

SCALABLE DEPLOYMENT

From One Door to Multiple Locations

Office Doors

Main entrance, management room or staff-only areas.

Restricted Rooms

Server room, finance room, store room or sensitive areas.

Factory & Warehouse

Control access to production, warehouse and operational zones.

Multi-Door Systems

Centralised permissions across several doors or zones.

Multi-Branch

Standardise access rules across multiple locations where supported.

Future Expansion

Plan the architecture for more doors, readers or integrated systems later.

ADVANCED ACCESS MANAGEMENT

Expand Beyond Basic Door Entry

Depending on the selected access-management platform and hardware, a project can expand into more advanced functions and integrations.

Access Schedules

Control access by day, time or user group.

Anti-Passback

Help prevent repeated or improper entry patterns in supported deployments.

Area Headcount

Track people within defined areas in supported access-management setups.

Intercom

4. Configuration & Training

Create users, permissions, schedules and train system administrators.

5. Support

Technical assistance, troubleshooting and future expansion support.

Door Access Control FAQ

Can access control be installed on an existing glass door?

Often yes, but the locking hardware and bracket depend on the door type, frame, opening direction and site condition. A site assessment is recommended.

What happens during a power failure?

The behaviour depends on the lock type, power supply and backup design. Battery backup and appropriate fail-safe or fail-secure planning can be included according to the project requirement.

Can face or fingerprint be used to unlock the door?

Yes, with supported biometric access terminals. The exact verification methods depend on the selected device and architecture.

Can multiple doors be managed centrally?

Yes. Controller-based and compatible networked access systems are designed for centralised multi-door management.

Is door access control the same as attendance?

No. Attendance records staff clocking for workforce management, while access control decides whether a user is allowed through a door or area. Some devices and systems can support both functions.

Can access control integrate with turnstiles, lifts or barriers?

Yes, in supported projects. These are normally designed as separate integration scopes based on the access-management architecture.
